The Class 40 Preservation Society has no shareholder scheme for the locomotives. We are not a supporting group for locomotives owned by anyone else - the locos are jointly owned by the entire Membership.

By joining the Class 40 Preservation Society, you will receive our highly regarded magazine 'THE WHISTLER', keeping you up to date on restoration progress, details of operating dates and fundraising, and also articles and stories of interest. You can also join our Yahoo group to receive regular email updates of all the latest news from the Society.

Please note: the membership subscription fee is set only to cover the basic admin costs of running the Society and producing 'THE WHISTLER'. Locomotive restoration, preservation and operation can be very expensive. We encourage all our Members to take part in operating and fund-raising activities - we rely on donations large and small from our Members, either to general funds or to particular appeal funds from time to time. Every little helps.

We also encourage Members to take an active part in the running of the Society by helping our volunteer team with locomotive restoration and maintenance, or at sales events. No particular experience is necessary, although you do need to be fairly fit and have no fear of getting dirty!

Important Note:

For insurance purposes, any volunteers working on East Lancashire Railway must be full members of the East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society. Please visit the ELR Website, or enquire at Bury Bolton Street station booking office for further details.

For a nominal fee of £5.00 you can also select a personalised Class 40 Membership Number or alternatively you can select any other BR Loco number.  For details of the available Class 40 numbers and further information please contact the Membership Secretary.
